Company History
After 14 years in the music business, David Howard Donald founded DHD Productions Inc. in 1982, as a live event and radio broadcast, production company. Broadcasting live interviews and commentary via satellite from backstage locations at major music festivals in California and Jamaica, these programs were syndicated by DHD and heard on its SATIN FM network of stations, coast-to-coast, in Canada.
By the end of 1983, DHD had evolved into a multimedia and corporate video production company. In 1985, DHD began using Amiga computers to create 2D graphics and later in 1986, 3D computer animations. An article written by Mr. Donald in Amigo Times about genlocking devices created significant public response at the 1989 Boston SIGGRAPH convention and again at the 1989 and 1990 NAB conventions in Las Vegas with even a California-based Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL) letter praising the quality of the published study of genlocking devices. From 1986 through 1990, owner/founder Mr. Donald taught various video production and computer animation courses at Montreal-based Dawson College's Continuing Education for Adults Center. In 1988 and 1989, Mr. Donald lectured at the annual Montreal and Toronto Combec & Dimensions broadcast industry conventions. During the same period, Mr. Donald began writing articles for computer & video industry magazines.
In 1989, DHD, evolved, once again, into a 3D computer animation production company with video post-production, 3D & 2D computer animation, and digital special effects services, for the corporate, advertising, television & film industries. In 1991, DHD Productions changed names to DHD PostImage to better reflect it’s new direction. Concurrently, the present day DHD Productions Inc. was formed to provide a vehicle for continuing video & film productions. Subsequently, Mr. Donald sold DHD PostImage Inc. to public corporation, Greenlight Communications Inc., in November, 1994. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Donald continued on as founder of DHD PostImage, setting up sales offices in the historic Mary Pickford Studios, in Hollywood, California, now called Raleigh Studios.
In 1995, Mr. Donald started a new R&D joint venture called DHD R&D. DHD hired software engineers Kaveh Kardan and Mike Sweeney, owners of Metropolis Software to head up the initiative. Originally from Robert Abel & Associates, Mike Sweeney wrote the rendering engine software for Able's software, as well as, Wavefront, Alias and Softimage. At DHD R&D, Mike & Kaveh were working on their new rendering engine featuring radiosity. The software engine was tested on Maui's supercomputer in 1996 with results showing it was faster than any other competing software by a factor of 100 times. Unfortunately, Mike passed in 1996 due to complications from a previous automobile accident. Kaveh went on to live and work in Hawaii.
In 1996, Mr. Donald left DHD PostImage & Greenlight Communications, moving back to Montreal, Canada, to spend time with his elderly parents. Greenlight Communications ceased operations in 1998.
In 1997, Mr. Donald produced an award winning commercial for Samsungʻs Hite Beer and Cheil Communications America. The shoot took place in Montrealʻs Olympic Stadium complex and the Florida Keys.
In 1998, Mr. Donald created JonEakes.com for North Americaʻs longest running TV home improvement expert, Jon Eakes, and Life TV/HGTV Canada. His company, DHD Productions, ran the website and ecommerce business for www.joneakes.com until April, 2007.
From July, 1999, to date, DHD Productions has shot various interviews, TV pilots and a documentary film entitled "From Within the 7th Fire" on famed SouthWest artist, Ben Wright, and his journey to become the first "Artist in Residence", at the prestigious Frederic Remington Art Museum, in Ogdensburg, New York. As well, a DHD Productions subsidiary runs a "Green" online hardware store selling insulated mailslots to United States Housing Authorities, and consumers alike.
Reflecting it’s new direction and business for the 21st century, today, DHD Productions Inc., a federally incorporated Canadian company, with offices in Toronto, Canada, operates under several DBAs, as a media content producer and marketing specialist, dealing in television, radio, web design, ecommerce, electronic publishing, sponsorships, endorsements, management, merchandising and fulfillment. DHD TV.NET is the documentary film division.
